Carnelian proved immune to the vagaries of fashion in times. It was a favorite of the patricians and slaves, of the Pharaohs and farmers. This stone is a wonderful material to be processed, polished, neutral to chemically active environments and is used for various ornaments and thread for vases and lamps, for bottles of flavoring. But still particular impressive are carnelian intaglios.

It is reasonable to assume that this high-quality material suitable for engraving always has been less accessible and more expensive. That’s why the leading artists from that time processed carnelian color through heat and coloring. The natural color of carnelian is due to impurities of iron oxides in the chalcedony. This has been known and used since the time of ancient Rome. Iron oxides penetrate deep into the material and improve the color performance permanently and irreversible. This is the reason why modern jewelry industry adopted this treatment as standard practice and most often carnelian offered on the market are additional shaded and / or heated.

Carnelian may lose some of its charm if it is exposed for a long time at sunshine. Ultraviolet impacts the color - dark red color fades and orange tones appear. Also it must be kept away from oils.
