Rock Crystal

People admired the beauty of rock crystal since ancient times. The Japanese believed that the crystal is a frozen dragon breath. The Europeans called it Bohemian diamond. Egyptian patrician fled from the unbearable heat putting a face to the balls of crystal. And the inhabitants of Olympus, according to mythology, drank the divine nectar only from crystal glasses.

The beautiful rock crystal is definitely one of the most perfect crystals in the nature. It is perfectly transparent macro crystalline quartz forming crystals which sizes range from millimeters to meters. Composition of rock crystal is simple - it is silica with the formula SiO2. Various impurities give the mineral different hue: purple, pink, gold, smoky, etc.

Not surprisingly the stone received its name because of its remarkable resemblance to the usual frozen water – from Greek word «Crystallus» meaning ice. According to Greek legend rock crystal is a sacred ice. Ancient Greeks believed the gods wept for the people on Earth, and their tears turned transparent icy stones. Indeed rock crystal was taken for petrified water not only in ancient Greece: the Chinese and the Japanese, Eskimos and Indians of North America, as well as medieval European scientists somehow tied its origin with ice or snow.

Many popular stones are surrounded by rumors, legends and superstitions. Of course, rock crystal - a stone with millennial history - is no exception. Its products are always surrounded by a veil of magic. No wonder that in many fairy tales, witches made rituals with a crystal ball, striking charm and looking to the future.

Crystal Skulls

Probably the most famous products of this stone are the crystal skulls. The first information about it appeared in the late XIX century. Amazingly accurate polished female crystal skull was found by young Anna in 1927 in Honduras in the ruins of an ancient temple city Labaantuna. Apparently  it was considered  an embodiment of absolute evil associated by the Maya with woman. This skull of death is made is a full-size, made of solid crystal. Its lower jaw is slightly mobile and it seems that the skull is talking. Inside it there are turned lenses and empty channels, optical fibers, so if you put on the altar candles at the bottom of the skull you can create the impression that thin beams of light  streams from its eyes. Strange things start happening to those who touched this skull. For the first time this happened with the Anna. One night, she placed a surprising discovery near her bad.  All night she dreamed strange dreams -  the life of Indians thousands of years ago. When the skull was removed for the night away, the dreams stopped. But as soon as it was back to her pillow vibrant color and sound "movies" renewed. Anna again heard talk Indians, watched their daily activities, the ritual sacrifices. And every time it were new details of the life of ancient Indians, including some not previously known to scientists.

The first studies conducted in 1964 in a special laboratory by "Hewlett-Packard" showed that the skull had been made long before the first civilizations in this part of America. In addition, rock crystal of such high quality in these areas does not occur. And it is quite an amazing discovery - antediluvian skull, weighing 5.13 kg with size of 125.4 * 203.4 mm was created from a single crystal. Modern scientists have carefully examined several skulls and found that some of them (including the famous skull of the British Museum) do not have anything to do with Maya or Aztecs - the electron microscope analysis of the crystal has shown clear traces of machining. However, other such artifacts from private collections are not yet clear, but certainly have a very ancient origin, as were ground by hand by paste consisting of sand and silica crumbs.

If in the past a huge demand was crystal dishes, cups, lamps with pendants made of rock crystal, nowadays the most popular products of this stone are souvenir balls. Their value depends on the diameter and quality. Large are very much appreciated. The biggest perfectly transparent crystal ball is kept in the Smithsonian Museum (Washington). The diameter of this giant is 327 mm, weights 48.62 kg. It was made in China from crystal gained in Burma.

Most inexpensive products on the market are made from synthetic crystal - a mixture of quartz sand, lime and soda. They are absolutly transparent which helps in many cases to identify a fake easy. The fact is that natural clear crystals are very rare. Often in the crystal are observed small muddy spots small debris. Crafts made of natural crystals are expensive so the low price should alert the buyer.

Rock crystal not in vain is compared with a frozen ice – this is how you can distinguish a fake from a natural stone. Crystal actually resembles a frozen piece of ice being cold but the glass on the contrary. They say artificial crystal quality is far superior to natural. Perhaps it is so in fact, if judged only by the transparency and gloss. But try to hold in hand a ball of a natural rock crystal - it will feel pleasantly cool. Artificial crystals (Bohemian, Baccarat, Swarovski crystals, etc.) are certainly very beautiful but they are only a glass – no matter how wonderful they look they still cannot be compared to the stones created by nature.
