The name of this stone comes from the Persian word zargun or golden stone. It is quite rare found in the nature. In the East zircon was called younger "diamond's brother", as it imitates diamond. Although colourless zircons are characterized by brilliant luster and strong play in fact it is easy to distinguish them from the diamond - zircon has much lower hardness.

The mineral occurs as well-faceted pointed crystals. Crystal size is usually small - a few millimeters. Big are considered zircons bigger than 10 mm. In the jewelry are used brown zircons which after heating acquire gorgeous blue colour. Still today in the factory jewelry buying natural zircon (not cubic zirconia) is almost impossible - it is very rare stone, although earlier they had met quite often.

Cubic ZIrconia

cubic zirconia

Many people don't know that zircon and cubic zirconia are completely different stones. Cubic zirconia is artificially grown crystal of zirconium dioxide, diamond simulant, but with lower performance. Zircon is a natural stone. It is zirconium silicate and its chemical formula is ZrSiO4. It may contain various elements that give zircon different colors.
